    Happiness is a garden

There is a Chinese proverb that says to be happy for a week you take a new concubine. To be happy for a month, you kill a pig, and to be happy all your life, you build a garden.Princess Abkhazi (Peggy Pemberton-Carter, 1902-1994), a British heiress and wife of Prince Nicholas Abkhazi, who fled Russia after the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917. Both were Second World War prisoners — she a Japanese prisoner in China and he a German prisoner in Germany. They married after the war and settled in Victoria, BC, where they created Canada’s most celebrated private garden, the subject of a 1989 book, “In a Canadian Garden.”
